There are 12 student and 12 master level grades in Wing Tsun. The twelve student grades are represented, following Chinese tradition, by 12 different coloured plum blossoms. Each student grade takes about 3 months to master, with the master levels taking longer. The Twelfth student grade is the equivalent to Black Belt.
The first four master levels of Wing Tsun are the Technican grades. These are followed by the Practitioners grades between 5th and 8th master level. Upon achieving 9th level you become a Grandmaster of the system. The 12th degree can be only acquired posthumously, symbolizing that all of us are seeking perfection, but we cannot achieve it in our lives. (Note also that Si-Fu Julian’s family crest also bears a similar theme with its Latin inscription ‘Perfectioni Insequens’ – which translates as ‘pursuing perfection’)
Wing Tsun is unique in that it teaches you, as you progress through the grades, how to defend against different attacks from all the major martial arts, from Karate and Judo to Tai-Boxing and Ju-Jitsu. No other martial art teaches such comprehensive self defence.
