The first step of the year...

Good afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon of the forthcoming seminar the first grading of the year will take place. For those that are new to reading my blog I recommend that you read some of my past entries to find out more about this topic.

It is always amazing how quickly time goes when you are working hard - it has now been over 3 months since the last grading took place. Most of the students should have spoken to the Si-Hings/Si-Meis by now about his topic when discussing the goals for 2008. However, if you haven’t, or if you are at all unclear about whether you should be grading, please approach the teachers about it. The Si-Hings/Si-Meis will also be going over with you the requirements for it next week (and if you asked nicely I’m sure they would be happy to teach you a private on it).

A message to the students who joined in January: I suggest attempting the first grade. Of course, every person is examined on an individual basis and achieving the grade is by no mean guaranteed, but this is the time to take your first step in Wing Tsun. It takes courage to do this (especially on my gradings b) but one of the founding principles of Wing Tsun is to learn to face your fears. I will also tell you, Grade 1 is not intended to be the most technical grade; rather it is there to show you have begun on your journey. I will be testing in the normal way, so you will have to adhere to the high standards (especially with regard to the rules and the etiquette). However, I think this is more than achievable in this time that has passed – not least because the first few weeks consisted entirely of personal guidance on the required material.
