Something worth dying for...

Good morning.

I have a number of quite interesting points that I would like to discuss regarding recent events. However, these will take place in following posts as today is an important day, being Election Day.

I am not interested in discussing politics or even an analysis of the policies of the various parties. It is the prerogative and responsibility of each individual to find out and make a decision according to what each person believes is right. Indeed, it has long been the tradition of a martial arts master to be neutral; people of all beliefs, backgrounds and religions should be able to train together united by the art, but free to hold their own private opinions without subject to undue influence. While I certainly hold my own opinions, this is not the business of anyone else. (Incidentally, although I was not present, I’m sure that you will find that my Sifu was similarly neutral with the recent general election in Hungary). A person in a responsible position must always be very careful not to abuse the power to influence others and be able to draw the line between personal and professional. Trainee martial art teachers would do well to take note...

However, what is of the upmost importance is that every person who is eligible to vote does so. Despite its many faults, the UK is one of the bastions of democracy in the world. As someone who has travelled extensively I can confirm that people and nations alike look to the UK and its population with respect and reverence for our democratic traditions. Not to take part in the election is not only to disrespect the country that you live in, but disrespect yourself. So many people in the world live in places where they could only dream of having a chance to place a vote that counts. Even in Europe such places exist (if you are interested as one such example do a little research on a place called Transnistria).

Finally, people died just so that others could have the chance to vote. From the millions who suffered and died in World War 2 to the Suffragettes, our ancestors appreciated how important it was to have the right to have a free vote. So the minimum you should do is vote out of respect for them.
