Good evening.

Having recently conducted an extensive grading of students in our schools (more details to follow) I thought it would be useful if I briefly outline the role of an examiner and how I believe an examiner should act. Im also writing this so that students of other martial arts can have some general idea of what they can expect from an examiner and avoid any misconceptions. It is a real shame in martial arts that some teachers (of which I have had the misfortune to meet too many) feel it is necessary to simply ‘sell’ grades to their students. They not only lose all their own self respect but bring martial arts, which can be such a force for good, into disrepute.

You should firstly know that money has nothing to do with the gr ...

Good morning

I would like to firstly say thank you to all those that attended the Chi-Sau seminar for making it such an enjoyable weekend for me; it turned out to be everything I had hoped for and more. It was certainly a fitting end to the seminar year and was nice to also have a large contingent from the Dulwich school as part of this.

The photos from the seminar will be put in the gallery in due course. I will notify you when this happens but, as I am told there are quite a number of them, this may take a bit of time.

For those that weren’t able to attend (and as a recap to those who did) I thought I would briefly go over what was co ...

Good morning.

Just a quick note to say that im looking forward to teaching the seminar on Chi-Sau this weekend. There will be a lot of information to cover, and I will also be relating it to its practical applications. As always, I will be teaching the theory that is needed to put it in context and make it effective.

Chi-Sau training can be one of the most draining parts of the Wing Tsun system (just ask my seniors who did 8 hours of training of this with me on Saturday), but if it is done correctly I also believe it is one of the most rewarding. Not only can it be both dynamic and slick, but its one of the rare exercises where you can actually see and feel the progression. Every single time you do it (with the proper guidance of course) you are constantl ...

Good evening.

I would like to pass my congratulations on Si-Hing Dean who was yesterday awarded the prestigious award of ‘Support Manager of the Year’ by his employers for his work as financial controller. Si-Hing has been a loyal student of mine for many years now and I can genuinely say that no-one could have deserved this award more than him – I have always found him to be diligent and determined as well as capable.

I am privileged to be able to work with such a dedicated and talented team of instructors and I hope that I can continue to work with Si-Hing and the rest of the instructors for many years to come.

Good morning.

Last night I visited the Dulwich school, taught by Si-Mei Della. It was excellent to see that the school is constantly growing and the classes are going from strength to strength. However, there were two other things that pleased me. The first was that the students had readily taken onboard the teachings on Wing Tsun, particularly the etiquette. While there were a few minor mistakes, they have done well to appreciate it in such as short amount of time. I will be writing more on the importance of this subject in due course, but for now it is suffice to say that etiquette is the foundation on which Wing Tsun is built.

The second thing that pleased me was the actual students themselves. As a master you have to be able to make accurate judgements about the characteristic ...

Special occasion

Good evening

This years Graduation will be held on Friday 14th December and is for all members of our schools and their family and friends. Please make sure that you put this date in your diaries, the instructors will be giving more details in due course, and a flyer will also be sent out in the post. As the hall is rather limited in space students will need to obtain tickets for the event.

All the students are expected there, so if you do have a problem attending please make sure that the instructors know straight away. I am aware that the date may not be ideal, as many people have their office parties around this time, but I promise you it will be worth the effort. You now have at least a month to negotiate with your boss ...

Congratulations

Good evening.

I would like to pass on my wholehearted congratulations to my Sifu, who just successfully passed the exam for 8th Practitioner Level a few days ago. It is interesting as I was not at all aware that my Sifu was grading when I wrote my last post… Life certainly works in mysterious ways

This is a very special grade – not only has my Sifu officially completed the whole Wing Tsun system but he is the only person outside China to hold this level. Furthermore, it is only one level below Grandmaster. However, in my opinion, what makes this grade all the more poignant and valued is that my Sifu is no ...
